City Council Approves Hollywood Millennium Project

Posted: Updated:
Hollywood, CA -

In a 13-0 vote, City lawmakers unanimously approved the proposed Hollywood millennium project, giving the green light for the construction of two new skyscrapers to join the skyline.

Mayor Garcetti supports the plan saying, "Absolutely I will sign it, it'd like to see the jobs and momentum we've seen in Hollywood continue, not have empty parking lots."

New York based developer Millennium Partners,  plans to build two skyscrapers in the parking lots next to Capitol Records.  It would create 1 million square feet of office, retail and hotel space.

In a statement developer Philip Aarons of Millennium Partners says he's elated about the vote, "the guiding principle all along has been to honor and preserve Capitol Records while enhancing its surroundings by adding a complimentary mix of uses…"

"Hollywood's best days are ahead, and we look forward to helping make that happen."

Critics have been rallying against the project saying the more than 35 story towers are out of scale for the neighborhood and would likely create a traffic mess for the area.  John Walsh is a vocal opponent of the project and heads Hollywoodhighlands.org. "We are a tiny community, the neighborhood of Hollywood, we can't handle the cars, it'll be like carmageddon times a million." Opponents also argue the skyscrapers would be unsafe given the proximity to the Hollywood fault line.  They made their case to lawmakers before the vote. George Abrams, opposes the project and said, "The city council should not turn a blind eye to the overwhelming evidence both of the existence of the Hollywood fault line and the langon study the EIR (Environmental Impact Report) is relying."

But Millennium partners says the environmental impact report proves the site is safe and they say they'll and secure the necessary permits to build safely. Groundbreaking could begin within a year but opponents say now that the plan is approved by the city, they'll go to court to try to put a stop to the project.
