NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A resident of a Long Island group home died after police tried to subdue him during a struggle.

Suffolk County Police say that they were called to the Maryhaven Center of Hope in Middle Island Wednesday night after a resident became uncontrollable and violent.

Maryhaven employees requested that, Dainell Simmons, 29, be transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for a psychiatric emergency.

Police say that Simmons fought with them when they arrived. They say they used a Taser gun and pepper spray on Simmons.

Simmons became unresponsive and he was transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson. Police say he died at the hospital.

His body was taken to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner where an autopsy will be performed.

Several police officers were injured in the struggle and were treated and released from various hospitals.

Police say an investigation into the incident is continuing.
