Service set for pioneering reporter Helen Thomas

TROY, Mich. (AP) -

A memorial service for pioneering journalist Helen Thomas is planned next month near Detroit.

The service will follow a divine liturgy beginning at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 15 at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in the Detroit suburb of Troy. The service is open to the public.

The 92-year-old Thomas died last Saturday at her Washington, D.C., apartment. Thomas was born to Lebanese immigrants in Winchester, Ky., and was raised in Detroit.

The Wayne State University graduate worked much of her career as a United Press International reporter and White House correspondent. She grilled nine U.S. presidents starting with John F. Kennedy.

Thomas was known for her tenacity and voicing her opinions. She resigned in 2010 as a Hearst Newspapers columnist after calling on Israelis to get "out of Palestine."
