Tifton considers 2 votes on Sunday booze sales

Posted: Updated:

TIFTON, Ga. (AP) - One South Georgia city is considering allowing voters to decide whether to relax local bans on Sunday alcohol sales.

WALB-TV reports city councilmen in Tifton are considering two separate issues, each of which would get its own referendum. One would let voters decide if local restaurants should be able to sell liquor by the drink on Sundays. The other would allow Sunday sales of alcohol by stores.

Georgia law previously banned Sunday sales by stores, but lawmakers decided to allow local communities to settle the issue individually.

The Tifton City Council plans a public hearing on Sunday sales Aug. 5. The council could vote later in the month on whether to place the issue on the November ballot.
