BOSTON (AP) - Newly elected U.S. Sen. Edward Markey has been named chairman of a Senate subcommittee that oversees international energy security and environmental and climate protection.

Markey was elected to fill John Kerry's former Senate seat during a special election last month. Markey was appointed head of the Subcommittee on International Development and Foreign Assistance, Economic Affairs, International Environmental Protection, and Peace Corps.

The subcommittee oversees U.S. development policy and foreign assistance programs and also has responsibility over international monetary policy, U.S. foreign economic policy, and international investment, protection of intellectual property, and technological transfer.

The subcommittee is also responsible for oversight of the Peace Corps.

The Massachusetts Democrat will also serve on the European Affairs, and Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs subcommittees. Markey represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House for 37 years.
