Herald: Boston won't take part in program to fight welfare fraud
BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – The city of Boston will not participate in a joint venture between local, state and federal authorities to crack down on welfare fraud, according to the Boston Herald.
The program allows local police officers to conduct undercover stings in stores suspected of accepting welfare funds for illegal purchases.
Monday, Massachusetts officials signed an agreement with the federal government to start the program. However, Mayor Tom Menino says Boston police won't participate because it could burn bridges with key contacts in many neighborhoods and threaten the department's community policing efforts.
