State's first mosquito pool to test positive for EEE in 2013 collected in Amherst

Posted: Updated:

AMHERST, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A mosquito pool collected in Amherst is the state's first to test positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis in 2013.

The Mass. Department of Public Health says the mosquito sample was collected on July 23.

The EEE risk level has been raised to moderate for Amherst. The surrounding towns of Granby, Hadley, Leverett, Pelham, South Hadley, and Sunderland are listed at low risk.

Belchertown was listed at moderate risk due to a horse being infected with EEE last year.

As of Saturday, 19 communities in the Commonwealth had mosquito pools test positive for West Nile virus.

There have been no human cases of EEE or West Nile virus reported in 2013.
