Plan to close MBTA station for repairs delayed

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) — The planned two-year closure of the Government Center MBTA station has been delayed.

The station was scheduled to close in September for a $90 million renovation, but state transportation officials were worried about the project overlapping with a planned shutdown of the Callahan Tunnel in early 2014. The concern was that having the two closures occur at the same time would cause major hassles for commuters, especially those trying to get to and from Logan International Airport.

As a result, the Government Center station will remain open until the tunnel reopens next spring.

Officials told The Boston Globe (http://b.globe.com/17Sx8we ) that work on the station will be begin as scheduled in the fall, but without immediately closing the stop.
