Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn seeks permission to close

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Interfaith Medical Center in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn has now become the second hospital in the borough in recent months to announce that it is closing. The hospital started notifying employees on Tuesday.

It looks like more than 1,500 employees at Interfaith will be out of a job in November, and 175,000 Bed-Stuy residents will lose their neighborhood hospital.

The hospital has been financially strapped for quite some time and attempted to reorganize but on Tuesday filed in bankruptcy court asking permission to shut down.

The closest hospital in this predominantly minority community is about two and a half miles away.

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, who is running for mayor, said he will help fight in court to try and keep Interfaith open. He and other mayoral candidates fought to keep Long Island College Hospital in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, open. However, after 155 years, that facility is closing. Interfaith may suffer the same fate

The bankruptcy court hearing for Interfaith is August 15.

When you hear about a place that still sells records, located in a hip neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn, you enter that store with certain expectations. One of them being: you hope the guy behind the counter talks about music the way Cory Fierman does."I think it's just like the most important thing to you," he says. "I don't know how to describe it. It's the most important thing to me.
