Pickens County rain floods roads, bridges; traps homes

Posted: Updated:

The dramatic rescue of two people washed downstream along with their pick-up truck amid raging floodwaters highlighted the rain-related dangers that plagued Pickens County Thursday morning.

A swiftwater rescue team deployed to the area just off Camp Hope Road pulled off a successful rescue, managing to reach and retrieve the two people who were stranded.

FOX 5's Chris Shaw said the pair was on the way to the nearby Camp Hope when fast-rising waters overtook Camp Hope Road -- and, the truck. Luckily, the truck ran up against a rocky embankment and some trees in the stream that caught and braced it.

Neither man inside the truck were injured.

An estimated five inches of rain fell in Pickens County Thursday morning, proving a bit too much to handle. Washed out roads, numerous trees down on roads and power lines and mudslides were reported the Pickens County Sheriff's Office.

By mid-day, local law enforcement reported 10 to 20 homes were cut off from main roads by high floodwaters.

Highway 136 East (Burnt Mountain Rd) had a bridge that was left impassible due to dangerous water levels. The Sheriff's Office says a mobile home and several residents' vehicles near the bridge wash-out were completely flooded.

All of the occupants in the mobile home got out safely and are staying at a neighbor's home for the interim.

On the same road, near the Scenic Overpass, a mud slide washed over the roadway. Deputies worked to remove downed trees from the Scenic Overpass area, as well. There was also one report of a driver standing on top of their car trying to flag down help.

At least one home in that area sustained significant flooding and there were multiple weather-related traffic wrecks that slowed travel along the roads in question.

Emergency crews said that it will be days before they have a handle on how much damage was done.

Pickens County Lt. Kris Stancil advised drivers to avoid the area if possible.
