Dolphin Deaths Becoming Mystery At Jersey Shore

Posted: Updated:
OCEAN CITY, N.J. -

It's been a sad sight to see at the Jersey Shore as dead dolphins have been washing up on the beach.

Almost two dozen have died so far.

Right now, no one knows why it's happening. But New Jersey environmentalists and state officials are trying to pinpoint the cause.

Two more dolphins were found Thursday afternoon, washing ashore in Ocean City and Margate.

The nonprofit Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine has been handling the cases so far.

State officials say it looks like the dolphins are dying because of disease, not because of problems with water quality.

So far, four dolphin deaths have been linked to pneumonia. Another dies of a common dolphin virus.

Twice as many dolphins have died farther south in Virginia.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley has more details in this video report from Ocean City.
