DETROIT (WJBK) -- A woman's body is found in a burned out apartment on Detroit's west side, after firefighters leave the scene. Emergency crews were called to the scene in the 1300 block of Forest around 4 a.m. Saturday. A couple of hours later a maintenance worker noticed the door was ajar, and found a body laying inside.

"In my 36 years of policing other places I can tell you I never heard of this, this is a first time," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig. "It's certainly something I'm concerned about. I don't want to speak for the fire commissioner but I'm certain he is equally concerned," Chief Craig told Fox 2 at the scene Saturday. Police are not releasing the victim's name at this time. They are now trying to determine whether the fire was set to cover up the crime.

Neighbors describe the woman as friendly, and a mother of two young children. Her car was found parked in a spot neighbors say was unusual. Investigators are waiting for an autopsy results to confirm the cause of death. They are also interviewing anyone who may have had contact with the victim. If you know anything about this crime, call Detroit Police.
