A pregnant woman sitting on a bench was hit by a falling tree and killed inside Kissena Park in Flushing Sunday evening.
Witnesses say it was an awful freak accident and that the woman was simply sitting on the bench when the tree came falling down on her.
“I heard a loud crash and a boom,” Same Kim said. “When we got there we saw a young Asian girl lying face down and there was blood coming out of her head.”
Salvatore Delligatti's wife was walking a dog and was just feet away when the tree came crashing down.
“She looked up and saw the tree across this park bench, and on top of the poor lady, it crushed her,” Delligatti said.
Emergency responders rushed the woman, identified as Yingyi Li, to New York Hospital Queens, but she did not survive.
Delligatti and other people who live nearby told Fox 5 they were not surprised by the falling tree. They say many of the trees in Kissena Park appear to be in bad condition.
“They need another program where competent people, tree people, to come around and assess which trees should be taken down, because it's a mess,” said Delligatti.
“There are other trees, huge trees that are slanted, they're tilted, they're old the roots are coming up, I guess they can only do so much at one time,” said Artie Altierri, resident.
As police investigated, people took in the scene, shocked at the tragic outcome.
“She was just enjoying a beautiful day in the park, just a tragic thing to happen,” said Kim.
NYC Park Advocates say this is the 12th incident involving a fallen tree branch or limb or in this case, an entire tree, in the last few weeks. This incident is the only fatal one in the recent spate of incidents.
The NYC Parks Department referred all calls regarding the incident to the NYPD.
