Common Core Technology Project: Skills For The 21st Century

Dr. Jaime Aquino was beaming. "Isn't this exciting?" he told a classroom of teachers waiting to be trained on the latest and greatest iPad. But, these iPads are very different than the one you might have or seen. This iPad like the 700,000 others LAUSD students will be getting are preprogrammed with interactive educational software. There's a firewall so, no Facebook or other social media.

All the media here will help students learn curriculum being developed in 45 states. That's the common bond in this program known as "common core" in which assessment tests in 2015 will be done online. Aquino says that's why they're starting to move forward on this program. The money for this is from your tax dollars. It's bond money dedicated for facilities or technology. It can not be used for things like teacher raises or creating smaller classroom sizes. 30,000 will be distributed in this first phase. 250,000 more in phase two and by 2015 all 700,000 will have been distributed.

Teacher training will take place this week in 47 different schools across LAUSD. One viewer wrote me and asked if there's enough bandwidth for all of that? I asked Dr. Aquino. The answer? Absolutely, he said. "And, there's even a backup system!" Welcome to the 21st Century!

The Common Core Technology Project (CCTP) at the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will support student achievement and learning of the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS), as well as the knowledge and 21st century skills needed for students to graduate college-and career-ready.

Through the CCTP, the District will equip classrooms with up-to-date technology and provide every student with access to a personal computing device to allow for more individualized instruction.

The District will hold one of the first CCTP elementary school teacher training sessions on Monday for Phase 1 schools.

The program will provide an individualized, interactive, and information rich educational experience by:

  • Providing educators with tools (devices) to advance student learning and create learning spaces that are designed to increase learner engagement
  • Supporting the CCSS implementation by providing all students with the opportunity to engage with digital curriculum, interactive supports and adaptive assessments
  • Closing the "Digital Divide" by ensuring all students have access to 21st century skills and technology.

The District is utilizing a phased rollout approach for the program.  In Phase I, the program will start in 47, K-12 schools beginning this school year. The schools will be equipped with one-to-one access to devices for CCSS-based learning and assessment preparation. District staff will present an assessment of Phase I in the Fall of 2013 before requesting full funding of the remaining phases.

Assessment includes feedback on device rollout at the 47 schools, as well as feedback from teachers, students, parents and other key stakeholders.
