Making summer-to-school a smoother transition

ATLANTA -

The boys and girls of Decatur's City School's Glen wood Elementary were some of the first in metro Atlanta to put summer behind them and head back to class.

"Back to school can be a really exciting time for students and parents, but it can also be a really stressful season," Dr. Wendy Dickinson, a psychologist, said.

Dr. Dickinson, of Grow Counseling in Buckhead, says anyone with a youngster starting at a new school will want to stay positive.

"So, say things like, ‘You're going to have a great time. You're going to meet a lot of new friends. This is going to be a really awesome opportunity for you,'" the doctor said.

"If you can say those things, then that's what they internalize, and they're going to start looking forward to that time."

The first few drop offs can be emotional.

The doctor said, "One of the most important things is to remind them that they're okay, that you know the teacher, you know the school that they're sending them to, that you are going to come back and pick them up at the end of the day."

She says try not to drag out those first drop-offs.

"Usually when parents hang around for a long time, the kids stay dependent on that parents and don't adjust to the school environment as quickly."
