Travel + Leisure: Storrow Drive westbound bridge worst in U.S.

Posted: Updated:

(MyFoxBoston.com) – Boston has the most dangerous bridge in the country, according to Travel + Leisure, which examined 2012 data from the federal highway administration and gave more than 700,000 bridges a sufficiency rating of zero to 100.

They found the Storrow Drive westbound bridge to be the most dangerous in the United States, with a sufficiency rating of zero.

The magazine says almost 58,000 vehicles use it daily and the pavement on the upper deck is too thick, causing strain on the corroding steel beams.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation released a statement to FOX 25 Tuesday assuring the public that the bridge is safe for travel.

"DCR has made a number of repairs to the Storrow Drive tunnel and bridge in recent years to ensure that they are safe for travelers," said DCR spokesman Bill Hickey. "Through frequent inspections and the use of installed sensors, DCR closely monitors structural elements in the Storrow Drive tunnel and assures the public that the bridge and tunnel are safe for travel."

Route 145 in Revere was the 11th worst and 495 Northbound in Amesbury was number 20.
