CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw became an instant fan favorite after taking a puck to the face during Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals last season.

The 22-year-old required stitches to close the wound he received in the Stanley Cup-clinching 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.

Shaw played through the game, but after those stitches were removed, his friend Joel Alpert had an idea: sell them to the highest bidder.

"It's really a once in a lifetime opportunity," Alpert says of the auction. "It's one of a kind, it came right from Andrew. They were obviously gonna be thrown away until we came up with this idea."

The framed stitches along with an autographed picture are being auctioned off on eBay.com with all proceeds being donated to the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. The V Foundation has pledged to use the donations for breast cancer research; something that touches close to home for Shaw. His mother, Darlene, is a breast cancer survivor.

"It's a great way to raise money and give somebody a part of history for the Chicago Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup," says Alpert.

A day after the auction began, there were 34 bids with the highest bidder at $1,600.

The auction will conclude on Aug. 25.
