Historic steeple returns to top of Dorchester parish

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – A steeple, which has adorned the First Parish Church in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood for over 200 years, has returned to the top following a $5-million restoration project.

The steeple was removed in November 2006 to be restored as part of the renovation of the exterior of the church, which is located at 10 Parish St., Revered Arthur Lavoie of the First Parish Church told The Boston Globe.

In addition to the work on the steeple, crews repaired the existing structure, created a new bell tower, restored lantern sections and gave it a fresh coat of paint.

"It's a point of pride and a huge accomplishment for us to be able to pull this off," Lavoie told the newspaper. "The project gives us a new boost of energy and lets the community know we are still here and still going strong."

According to the newspaper, the congregation is in the process of raising funds to restore the interior of the church and bring it back to its former glory.
