Suspect In Fort Hood Rampage Begins Trial

Posted: Updated:

Trial finally begins in the worst non-combat attack ever at a us military base. Thirteen people were killed and more than thirty others wounded in November of 2009.

Nearly four years after the shocking shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas., Army Major Nidal Hasan is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.

The 42-year-old psychiatrist chose to represent himself in defense. Many of his wounded victims are expected to be questioned by Hasan on the witness stand.

The American-born Muslim planned to argue that he carried out the attack in "defense of others." he wanted to protect insurgents fighting US troops. Fort Hood is where American soldiers prepared to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan. But, the judge in the case blocked Hasan's strategy.

"He admits, he actually openly and happily seems to admit he did this. he justifies doing it. and he's not claiming self defense we would normally think of as far as justification," analyzes Anne Marie McAvoy, a former federal prosecutor.

Hasan was shot in the back during the shootings. He is paralyzed from the waist down. Confined to a wheelchair. Hasan is expected to get 15 to 20 minute stretching breaks about every four hours during this trial.

The 13 jurors are all military officers. They must be unanimous to find Hasan guilty of premeditated murder. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

In opening statements, the prosecutor said that Hasan thoroughly planned the attack, stockpiling bullets, buying a gun and practicing at a shooting range.
