Cardboard Officer Stops Thefts

Posted: Updated:

A cop seems to be helping stop crime in Boston. Only this cop isn't real.

It's a cardboard cutout of a real police officer, and it's posted at the bike cage at the Alewife MBTA subway and bus station in Cambridge. The station's has had trouble with bike thefts.

Officer David Silen is the officer who's image is displayed on the cut-out. Silen says at first he wasn't sure if it would work. Now he believes the sight of an officer, real or fake, is a good reminder not to commit a crime.

"Strange it took a while getting used to. I was a little startled by it when I first saw it, but I'm used to it now," says Officer Silen. "We are not tied up taking stolen bike reports here, so we have more time available to respond to more serious crimes that require a police response."

Last month, one bike was reported stolen at the station, compared to five in July of last year.

Silen says having less stolen bike reports allows police to focus on more serious crimes. This cutout is also a money saver. According to Deputy Chief Robert Lenehan, it would cost $200,000 a year to have an officer watch over the cage full-time.
