Back to School Shopping: How to save the most money

Back to school shopping is unavoidable, and your shopping list can quickly grow out of control. Surveys show families with school age children will spend an average of $634 on school supplies and apparel.

Bargain Shopper Mom Melissa Buckles shares simple tips on how to save money during the second busiest shopping time of the year.

From Melissa:

Take inventory

-- Shop at home before heading out to the store. You're bound to discover all sorts of school supplies in perfectly good condition. I bought these binders last year for my daughters, and they will definitely be reusing them. Scissors and pencil boxes are other items that tend to last.

-- When you do buy new, splurge on items that are high-quality and durable. You'll end up saving money in the long run, even if the items are expensive up front. I bought this backpack five years ago and haven't had to buy a new one since.

Get the kids looking great for less

-- Avoiding the mall will help you keep costs down. Shop local instead and look for coupons before buying. For example, Valpak is currently offering a great deal for Connie's Children Shop in St. Clair Shores. Print the $10 off coupon at Valpak.com and you'll be well on your way to saving on brand name apparel, uniforms and more.

-- And, while the good deals are available, you might want to buy some spring/summer items now that can either be repurposed for fall or used next year.

Use coupons and shop online

-- If you'd rather shop online, check out Savings.com.  They have a team of experts that organizes all the best deals for you - so, you're not only saving money, but you're also saving time!

-- Your best savings will come when you can stack an online coupon code on top of a sale price. If you do that, you can usually find in-season clothing for more than half off.

Price Match

-- Don't forget to price match so that you don't have to run around to all the different stores in your area trying to score the best deals.

-- Office Depot has a great policy - if you find a lower price at another store on a new, identical item, show them the price at the time of purchase and they'll match it on the spot. You can also show them the lower price within 14 days of purchase and they'll pay you the difference. Just make sure you bring your weekly ad with you. If you visit my blog, BargainShopperMom.com, you can find a list of retailers with price matching policies as well as tips on how to do it.

Explore mobile apps

-- The Target Cartwheel app is one of my favorites because it's so easy to use.

Get Social

-- Like and follow your favorite brands on Facebook. Old Navy and Gap are two that share exclusive coupons on their social media pages often that you won't find anywhere else.
If you prefer Twitter, tweet @ValpakCoupons or @Savings with hashtag #HelpMeSave and mention the back to school items you're looking for. They'll send you a coupon in return!

-- And, check out my blog, BargainShopperMom.com. I'm sharing all the best discounts each week. Make sure you check sooner rather than later - the best deals are out now, and you'll miss out if you wait until the end of August.
