UC Riverside's New School Of Medicine Opens

Posted: Updated:
Riverside, CA -

(FOX 11 / AP) The University of California, Riverside is opening its new school of medicine to a class of 50 students.

Local newspaper media sources report that orientation begins Monday, after more than three decades of the school's piecemeal program.

The four-year medical program used to begin at UC Riverside, only to have students head to UCLA for their last two years of classes.

The process of planning for a wholly UC Riverside based program began in 2003, was approved by the UC Regents three years later and final plans were submitted in 2008.

California's struggling economy slowed the school's path to opening, but after a $100 million fundraising effort, the school will operate at a reduced capacity.

Only 83 of 2,400 applicants were accepted, and 50 chose to attend UC Riverside.

From Hal Eisner:

"How many of you have dreamed of being doctors?"I asked some 50 medical students in a class on CPR. All hands went up. "How many of you want to practice here in the Inland Empire when you get your degrees? Most hands went up. That's exactly the response faculty at the new UCR Medical School would want to see.

Sr. Associate Dean Neal Schiller says the city and surrounding communities are terribly under served medically... about 3000 doctors short of what they should have. By having a local medical school Schiller says it's hoped the new MD's produced here would work in this community and help with that shortage.

The school's original dreamers starting working on creating a medical school in 2003. It was the worst possible time to build a medical school given the economy. They needed 15 million a year from the state, but the state's finances were such it couldn't be done. Finally, they got 100,000 million from the community and that encouraged the state to join in on this first medical school in almost 50 years.

Now ... they'll teach doctors who, they hope, will help kids with fevers, coughs and allergies and adults with cancer, heart problems and having babies. The Medical School at UC Riverside - for the staff and students here it may be the much needed prescription for what ails the community - a lack of doctors.

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
