Pickens Co. hopes to clean up, dry out before more rain

PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. -

For the second time in a week, Pickens County was hit hard by flooding.

Most of the damage throughout the county was to driveways and roads. There were also several mudslides.

Brad Muse thought a loud noise he was a train coming through early; when he stepped outside he realized the sound was rushing water.

"I stood right here and was sitting here watching and it went woosh," Muse said. "The whole thing came down through there."

A mudslide by some railroad tracks in Muse's backyard left what looks like a canyon cut through his yard.

"It was just, I mean funneling all the way through here," he said.

Most of that mud, water and debris ended up just a short distance down Gennett Road. A huge section of the road washed away right after Misty Muse drove though on the way to work.

"It's deep, it's wide. It would have swallowed my whole car up," said Misty Muse. "If I'd of been here when it collapsed, it would have just washed me away."

John Weaver, the mayor of Jasper, said it could take some time before road is open again.

"It didn't only take our drain pipe, it also took our water main," John Weaver, the mayor of Jasper. "So the first thing had to do is get the water turned back on for a nursing home and a subdivision."

The fast and heavy rainfall caused Cove Creek to rise higher than Keith Herndon has ever seen it.

"Waded through the water up to about waist deep to get the tractors out and the four-wheelers out and everything else out," Herndon said. "I had to leave because the water got too high. Wasn't worth getting hurt over."

Herndon, who lives along Cove Creek, said that his property is in a 100-year flood plain. He can't believe they were hit twice in a week. He said that the creek was 10 times its normal size on Wednesday.

"We've been here almost 10 years and this is the third major flood in nine and a half," Herndon said.

The water began to recede around 10 a.m. Residents said they were thankful to see it go down, but some had lots of cleaning up to do.
