Heavy rain expected Friday ahead of decent weekend

Posted: Updated:

From FOX 25 Meteorologist Shiri Spear:

The Friday morning commute will be dry. Rain will spread from west to east through the morning hours. A cold front will pass through the evening with pockets of heavy rain.

It will become a messy day with occasional downpours, lightning and gusty winds. The heaviest rain is expected from 11 AM to 8 PM. Rain totals will likely range from 0.5"-1" with locally higher amounts where heavy bands set up. At this time, the highest rainfall amounts are expected from Boston, north and west.

We'll have to watch for strong thunderstorm this afternoon with damaging winds. Sustained winds on the Cape will range from 15-25 mph. Elsewhere southerly winds 10-20 mph (strongest at the coast) with gusts 30 mph are forecasted.

The Flash Flood Watch has been extended until 9 pm for areas north and west of Boston. An inch of rain is probable throughout the area with up to 3" in central, western Mass and Merrimack Valley.  Rain totals will range from 0.5"-1" in southeastern Mass. Please use care in flood prone locations.  Rain will taper off later this evening.

Highs will likely be limited to the upper 70s due to rain and cloud cover, we may sneak a few lower 80s in early afternoon in southeastern Mass.

Rain showers should taper off around 2 AM (5 AM Cape). After that improvements will steadily arrive into the weekend.

Saturday will see highs in the mid 80s. Morning clouds will diminish to reveal a mostly sunny afternoon. It will still be breezy with W/NW winds 10-15 mph gusting to 30. I expect rip current risks at local beaches to remain elevated as a result.

Sunday will be sunny with less wind and less humidity. High will reach the mid to upper 70s on the coast and lower 80s inland.
