SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) - The 23-year-old man fatally shot after an altercation with a Mass. State Police trooper has been identified as Wayne R. Edwards of Springfield.

A 22-year-old Springfield woman wounded in the incident has not been identified.

State police say the trooper stopped the pair for speeding at about 12:20 a.m. on Interstate 91 in Springfield.

At some point during the stop, police say Edwards became combative and began struggling with the officer, who then fired shots, striking Edwards.

The female passenger exited the car before the suspect drove away and crashed into a barrier about two-tenths of a mile from the scene. The trooper called for assistance and administered aid to the driver, authorities say.

Both Edwards and his passenger were taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he was pronounced dead. The woman, who was injured getting out of the car, was treated and released.

Police say the trooper, who has been placed on administrative leave, joined the force in 2012.

Inside the car, troopers found a loaded 25-caliber handgun on the driver's seat and a loaded 40-caliber handgun under the front driver's seat. Both guns had obliterated serial numbers.

The incident remains under investigation.
