Barge takes on water after collision in Cape Cod Canal

Posted: Updated:

BOURNE, Mass. ( -- The Coast Guard responded to a collision between a tug boat and a barge in the Cape Cod Canal Wednesday that resulted in the barge taking on water.

The Southeastern New England sector of the Coast Guard was called to the scene of the collision just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Crew members from the 112-foot tug boat "Doris Morian" reported they lost power while towing the 410-foot barge known as the "Alexander" when the two collided.

Investigators say the Doris Morian's crew was able to tow the Alexander out of the canal and into Buzzards Bay to an anchorage about two miles east of West Island.

The Alexander, which was carrying cement to New York, was taking on an estimated five-feet of water.

Coast Guard officials say there has been no reported impact to the environment and no reported injuries.
