Attleboro man acquitted of manslaughter charge

FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - An Attleboro man has been acquitted of charges connected to the fatal shooting of a stranger he found inside his girlfriend's Mansfield apartment.

Tyerell Charles was found not guilty of manslaughter Wednesday by a Fall River Superior Court jury.

Charles' attorney tells The Sun Chronicle his client is "grateful." Attorney Michael Doolin says Charles shot 22-year-old Aderito Cardoso of Brockton in self-defense on the night of Jan. 14, 2011 when he found the victim in his girlfriend's apartment and thought she was being sexually assaulted. The men did not know each other.

Doolin says Cardoso pulled a gun and shot Charles first, before Charles wrested the weapon away and shot Cardoso in the head. Charles then called 911.

Prosecutors say Charles acted out of rage and jealousy.
