Order filed by AG Coakley halts evictions at Charlestown marina

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The owner of a Charlestown marina who told boaters to get their boats out by Thursday has been told to stop the eviction.

Martin Oliner, owner of Shipyard Quarters Marina, gave boaters two days to remove their boats from the facility, citing circumstances beyond his control.

Attorney General Martha Coakley announced Thursday that Oliner has been ordered to halt any attempt at evicting boats and to take necessary steps to ensure the structural safety of the facility.

"Shipyard Quarters Marina continues to suffer from serious structural problems placing the public at risk," AG Coakley said. "This latest action is another example of this owner dodging his responsibility to correct this dangerous situation for boat owners and the general public. Our primary concern is for the safety of the boat owners and we continue to explore all legal options. We're also working with Mayor Menino's Office and the MassDEP to provide services for them."

As part of a temporary restraining order approved by Judge Elizabeth Fahey last week, Oliner was required to make part of the marina safe for remaining vessels until the end of boating season. Oliner was required to do so until an engineer can inspect the structural integrity of the marina. Coakley maintained that Oliner violated this portion of the order by telling boaters to vacate the marina.

An order filed by Coakley seeking to halt those evictions was approved pending the outcome of another hearing Monday.

City officials have called on marina administrators to make repairs on the facility after inspections uncovered several safety hazards including broken or nonexistent pilings, as well as corroded electrical systems.
