BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Former Red Sox pitcher Dennis Eckersley will fill in for Jerry Remy during the Sox broadcast Friday night following the arrest of Remy's son.
NESN told FOX 25 Eckersley will also cover for Remy during the upcoming road trip.
The announcement was made hours after the broadcasting legend's son was arrested in connection to the stabbing death of his longtime girlfriend.
The Middlesex District Attorney's office says 27-year-old Jennifer Martel was pronounced dead Thursday night at 1203 Stearns Hill Road in Waltham. Officers on the scene say they found Martel on a patio area with stab wounds to her chest and neck. They say Jared Remy was also covered in blood.
Investigators claim witnesses told them Remy stabbed Martel several times. He was held without bail Friday after being charged with murder and assault and battery.
The couple's 4-year-old daughter was inside the apartment at the time of the incident. She was placed in the custody of state child welfare officials. The girl was not harmed.
Jerry Remy's Twitter account released a brief tweet regarding the stabbing at about 11:30 a.m. Friday.
"It's difficult to comment after the news this AM. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Martel family," read the tweet.
NESN also released a statement Friday regarding the death.
"This morning, we learned of a terrible tragedy," reads the NESN statement. "All of us at NESN and the Red Sox, along with Jerry Remy, are filled with grief for everyone involved, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Jennifer Martel."
