DUNDEE, Mich. (WJBK) -

A 3 1/2-year-old boy in southeastern Michigan has died after shooting himself in the head.

Dundee police say Damon Holbrook picked up a loaded gun that belonged to a man who was staying in the home on the 300 block of Rawson St. He was pronounced dead Sunday at St. Joseph hospital in Ann Arbor.

Sgt. Tom Redmond says a man returned from work and left the gun on the floor of a bedroom closet.

"He was negligent in securing the gun and (not) unloading the gun and leaving it accessible to a small child," Redmond said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was remorseful but has been charged with manslaughter with gross negligence, the sergeant said.

"He had just arrived home from work. He had a pistol license," Redmond said. "He left the portable case on the bedroom closet floor and walked out of the bedroom and into the kitchen. ... Whenever there's kids, you should always unload the weapon."The man's name hasn't been released.

Redmond says there were three other children in the house and two more adults.

Dundee is in Monroe County, 50 miles southwest of Detroit.
