BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Boston Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster has been suspended for five games by Major League Baseball for an incident that occurred during Sunday night's game against the New York Yankees.

Dempster is accused of intentionally throwing at and hitting Alex Rodriguez during the top of the second inning of the game.

The 36-year-old must also pay an undisclosed fine.

If Dempster chooses not to appeal, the suspension will begin Tuesday night.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi has also been fined an unknown amount of money for arguing with an umpire.
