WESTPORT, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A 45-year-old Fall River man is facing a slew of charges after police accused him of driving erratically and resisting arrest.

Carver police say an officer was at a stop sign on Old Country Road just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when she witnessed a green Chevrolet Lumina pass stopped cars in the opposite lane of traffic and head west on Country Road.

The officer began to pursue the driver, who police identified as 45-year-old Paul Correia. She claims Correia ran two red lights as he turned onto Route 88 and he continued passing cars in the opposite lane.

Correia reportedly crashed into the back of another car traveling south as he tried to swerve to avoid oncoming traffic. Police say Correia fled the scene of the crash and crossed over the northbound lane about a half-mile down the road, hitting the guardrail on the east side.

Westport police assisted at the scene. They claim Correia ignored officer's commands to exit the car and began hitting officers. Police say they had to use a stun gun to subdue Correia. After using the stun gun, they were able to remove the 45-year-old from the car and place him under arrest.

Correia was transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital for evaluation before being booked. He is charged with driving to endanger, operating at speeds greater than reasonable, marked lanes violation, failure to stop for a red light, failure to stop for a stop sign, failure to stop for police, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash with personal injury, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash with property damage, resisting arrest, and four counts of assault and battery on a police officer.
