FALL RIVER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – The Brightman Street Drawbridge in Fall River has been deemed inoperable until further notice after inspectors discovered a mechanical problem on the bridge.
The crack in the shaft, which opens the bascule leaf on the Fall River side, was discovered Tuesday. As a result, the bridge cannot be opened for marine vessels until it is repaired.
The Brightman Street Drawbridge spans the Taunton River between Fall River and Somerset. In the month of July, the Brightman Street Bridge opened a total of 85 times to accommodate 78 pleasure crafts, 5 fishing vessels and 6 motor vessels.
The Mass. Dept. of Transportation is working with the Coast Guard to resolve the issue; however, officials are warning boaters, especially pleasure boaters, it could take one week to develop an alternate plan and complete repairs.
The drawbridge was closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic in October of 2011 when the Veterans Memorial Bridge opened.
