Firefighters pull older couple from burning Lawrenceville home

Posted: Updated:
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Gwinnett firefighters pulled an unresponsive man and woman from a burning house on Lester Road Thursday morning in Lawrenceville.

A person who had just passed the burning home located in the 200 block of Lester Road helped alert firefighters to the blaze, FOX 5 Atlanta has learned.

The caller reportedly saw the smoke and flames, but couldn't immediately tell if there was anyone inside of the home. Fire officials say the caller stopped to knock on door of the home, but did not get a response.

On arrival, the Gwinnett firefighters immediately saw flames had engulfed the garage on the right side of the single-story wood frame and brick. Firefighters noticed a car parked in front of the home, suspected someone may be inside the burning home and acted quickly.

They entered the home and soon found two people – an older man and woman – and safely removed them from the home. Fire officials say the couple remained unresponsive even outside of the home and were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center "with advanced life support measures in progress."

A neighbor who saw the fire said, "I asked if Steve and Virginia was okay. He didn't acknowledge me. So, finally we saw them bring Steve out in the stretcher here. Virginia was put in the other stretcher."

She said, "Steve's our neighborhood watch guy. He watches after all of us."

The home and one vehicle inside of the garage are believed to be a total loss. Only a charred husk remain of what used to be the home. Flames reduced the garage to ruin.

The exact cause of the fire is currently undetermined under active investigation by the fire department.

Lester Road was closed from Highway 29 almost to nearby the railroad tracks due to fire equipment and hoses in the roadway.
