Dolphin Deaths Now Up To 63 In New Jersey

Posted: Updated:
BRIGANTINE, N.J. -

Dolphins remain in danger down at the Jersey Shore. A total of 63 have washed up there this summer – but that's just in New Jersey.

The number for all of the dolphin deaths along the East Coast is 228 over six weeks.

That's seven-times worse than the average summer.

Now, federal investigators are getting involved, FOX 29's Steve Keeley reported live Thursday morning from the Marine Animal Stranding Center in Brigantine.

Experts have designated it an "unusual mortality event."

The majority of the dolphins have been found on the stretch of beach between Long Island and Virginia. Most have been bottlenose dolphins.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has joined the search for what's killing the dolphins. But, so far, scientists are at a loss.

Already experts say this appears to be the most deadly season for dolphins along the east coast in 25 years.
