Penn National eyes Plainville for slots parlor

Posted: Updated:

PLAINVILLE, Mass. (AP) - After failing in its first two attempts to win a gambling license in Massachusetts, Penn National Gaming is giving it another shot.

Plainville town administrator Joseph Fernandes tells The Boston Globe that Penn National officials have had conversations with the owners of the Plainridge Racecourse about acquiring the state's only active harness track.

Plainridge was a one-time favorite to win a slots parlor license but fell from the competition when its ownership team was ruled unsuitable by the state gambling commission to run a casino.

Penn National has been spurned by Springfield and Tewksbury in efforts to bring gambling facilities to those communities.

While not commenting on the Plainville situation specifically, company officials said they are weighing their options in the state.
