Officer saves K9 after snake bite

Posted: Updated:
OCONEE COUNTY, Ga. -

A quick-thinking police officer saved his K-9 after the dog was bit by a snake.

Sgt. Shane Partain of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office said he let his partner, Orion, out of his cage on Monday night. After the dog was in the yard, Partain said he noticed there was something wrong.

"I turned around and saw that he was holding his right leg up off the ground," Partain said. "After I saw that, maybe another minute or so went by, then I realized that his breathing had... began to be labored."

After he saw that Orion's throat was swollen shut, Partain knew he had to act fast. He grabbed a canine first aid kit, which had recently been donated by the group "We Ride to Provide."

"I gave him two Benadryl just as quick as I could, literally had to force that down his throat because his throat was closed up," said Partain.

He rushed Orion to the animal hospital right away.  His vet found the snake bite and stabilized him.

"He was very serious. His throat was almost swollen shut," said Monica Kucher, the veterinarian who treated Orion. "If it wasn't for the Benadryl that Sgt. Partain had given him, he probably would not have made it to the hospital."

Partain said he's grateful that the Belgian Malinois survived.

"He's my partner," said Partain.

Orion's vet recommends that pet owners keeping Benadryl on hand in case of snake bites.  She says you should check with your veterinarian to see how much of a dose to give your pet in the case of an emergency.

Sgt. Partain said he expects Orion return to duty by next week.
