Taxi driver training in NYC

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

You might think that cab driver teaching and training happens on the road, but in fact most of it is in the classroom.

To enter the doors of Master Cabbie Taxi Academy, one of four taxicab schools in New York, you must have a chauffeur license, a clean driving record, a medical exam, and between $300 and $800 to spend on a 10-day course in being a New York City cabbie, ending in the exam.

Here is a sample question on the exam: In Manhattan, Lenox Avenue and St. Nicholas Street meet at

  • A. Central Park North
  • B. Central Park South
  • C. Fredrick Douglass Blvd.
  • D. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.

The correct answer is A. Central Park North.

At least 50 percent fail the test.

Cab driver Mozibur Rachman told us that only after he passed the the test and got his cabbie, or hack, license was he actually asked to put the pedal to the metal on the streets of New York when he sought employment.

TLC Commissioner and Chair David Yassky said the current can driver certification program is enough. He said the TLC drug tests applicants and checks their driving records.

There is no uniform road testing for cab drivers in New York.
