Detroit firefighters discover body in burned abandoned home

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Detroit firefighters were called to a house fire on Griggs off McNichols on Sunday, August 18th. Firefighters were called to the same house to put out another fire just two days later, but this time - they discovered a body they could have possibly missed the first time.

John Lee Perry lived on and off with his cousin, Julian Duncan. Duncan says Perry often left in the summer to crash in abandoned buildings on McNichols. That's what he's assumed to be doing when he was found dead inside the abandoned burning home.

The investigators report says Perry was likely inside the house when it first caught fire Sunday night. Perry's family believes if that's true, and firefighters found him the first time, he'd still be alive today. The report suggests Perry was trapped inside the house, and may have broken the living room window trying to escape.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office says Perry's body was not badly burned so he may have died from smoke inhalation, but the official cause of death is still unclear right now. Firefighters found him covered with furniture and debris, and say the amount of soot on his body could not have been caused by Tuesday's fire.

Duncan doesn't understand how, if his cousin was in the house during the first time, responders didn't see him. "They['re] supposed to search the whole dwelling, and they [didn't] find him Sunday. That means they [didn't] search the whole dwelling. They [didn't] find him 'til Tuesday," he tells Fox 2's Randy Wimbley.

We're told an autopsy wont be available for about a month. DFD is not commenting on what happened here Sunday night and says the investigation is ongoing.
