Man dies after being pulled from Fitchburg lake

FITCHBURG, Mass. ( -- A man who was pulled from a Fitchburg lake by a police officer has died.

The Sentinel and Enterprise reports Officer Derek Sullivan and another person dove into Mirror Lake at Coggshall Park just before 5:30 p.m. to rescue the unidentified swimmer.

Police tell the newspaper the swimmer was in chest deep water when the officer arrived. After he was removed, emergency crews began performing CPR.

The swimmer, a 59-year-old man, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The Worcester Telegram reports he was flown via medical helicopter to UMass Medical where he died.
