Mysterious big cat spotted roaming streets of NE Detroit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Big. Scary. Oh and it hisses. That's how Detroiters describe a large cat making a home in the city. The cat on the prowl has people on edge. It's been spotted on the streets of northeast Detroit. Residents want something done before someone gets hurt.

An expert spoke to Fox 2. She believes the cat is what's known as a Savannah cat, a domestic hybrid breed. The local breeder says the cats are a cross between a domestic house cat and a serval (a medium-sized African cat). The unusual mix was created in the late 1980s.

Savannah cats tend to be more social than house cats and they're the largest domestic breed.

The cat's tall, slim build often makes it look larger than it actually is. Some male Savannahs can weigh up to 20 pounds or more.
