Mass. Republicans plan meetings on tech tax

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (AP) - Republican lawmakers who oppose the new state sales tax on computer and software services plan to hold a series of meetings around the state on the tax.
House minority leader Rep. Bradley Jones of North Reading and his Senate counterpart, Sen. Bruce Tarr of Gloucester, say the round-table discussions are part of a GOP effort to repeal the tax approved last month by the Legislature as part of a transportation finance plan.
Business groups criticize the tax as vague and confusing and say it will hurt the state's technology sector.
State officials say they are establishing rules that will apply the tax as narrowly as possible.
The Republican-led roundtables are scheduled to begin Monday in Middleboro, and continue this week in Devens, Southbridge, Mansfield, Westborough, Wakefield, Plymouth and Westfield.
