Ga. officials urge safety as holiday approaches

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia Department of Natural Resources officials are stressing the importance of watercraft safety as Labor Day weekend approaches.

Agency officials say there have been 68 boating incidents, eight boating-related fatalities and 22 people have drowned in Georgia waterways this year. Officials say conservation rangers have also handed out 140 boating under the influence citations.

Boaters are encouraged to establish designated operators - similar to designated drivers - and take a boating safety course.

Officials say boaters and children should always wear lifejackets while they're on the water, and operators should avoid overloading their watercrafts with people or equipment.
