Ex-Salvadoran military leader sentencing continues

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - A former El Salvador military leader suspected of plotting what turned into a massacre is in a Boston courtroom for his sentencing on immigration charges.

Inocente Orlando Montano was arrested in 2011 after about a decade living in a Boston suburb. He pleaded guilty to lying on U.S. immigration forms.

A United Nations commission said Montano participated in a meeting to plot the killing of a priest suspected of supporting leftist rebels. That allegedly led to the deaths of six priests, their cook and her teenage daughter at a Jesuit university.

Montano has denied involvement.

On Monday, a Stanford professor testified she was "quite convinced" that Montano knew of human rights abuses committed by his troops.

A retired Salvadoran general is expected to testify for the defense. The hearing began Thursday.
