Detroiters go door-to-door for new carjacking crackdown

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Monday night Detroiters went door-to-door, explaining Detroit Police Department's "Heatwave Initiative," in partnership with H.E.A.T. (Help Eliminate Auto Theft).

The crew, including members of DPD, HEAT, as well as volunteers, visited homes, local business and gas stations. They urged neighbors and business owners to call a confidential toll-free tip line if they have information about suspected car thieves, carjackers, vehicle chop shops, auto-related insurance fraud and identity theft. The number is 800-242-HEAT.

DPD Chief James Craig says it's not just citizens who need to speak up. Some business out there are guilty of providing a safe haven for criminals by allowing them to loiter and deal drugs on their properties.

"If you allow criminal activity to go on at a location, it brings about other crimes. Some of the owners say well, we can't do it alone. We can't help this. Yes you can," said Chief Craig Monday evening at a community news conference kicking-off the initiative.

The chief adds more than 500 carjackings have happened in Detroit this year alone. That's a nearly 10% jump. And Chief Craig says that's absolutely unacceptable.
