Braintree bars out-of-town dates at dance

Posted: Updated:

BRAINTREE, Mass. (AP) — Dates from out of town are not welcome at Braintree High School's homecoming dance.

The school committee on Monday passed a ban on out-of-town guests at the annual dance planned for Sept. 28 at the request of administrators who say the event is so big they have trouble controlling dance floor behavior.

The Patriot Ledger (http://bit.ly/1fgfSTP ) reports that Headmaster James Lee requested the policy change. He says the dance draws as many as 1,000 students and it's easier for staff and chaperones to control the behavior of Braintree students because, unlike out-of-town guests, they know they will face consequences for breaking rules.

Mayor Joseph Sullivan was the only committee member to voice reservations about the policy.

The ban on out-of-town guests does not apply to proms, which draw smaller crowds.
