19-year-old dies following House of Blues concert

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – Three people apparently overdosed at a concert Tuesday night at the House of Blues on Lansdowne Street, leaving a 19-year-old New Hampshire woman dead.

The club was voluntarily closed, but it will be open Thursday night. According to The Boston Globe, the Boston Licensing Board wants to meet with the owners of the club to discuss what happened.

Police said the call came in at about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday after three people allegedly overdosed on an unknown substance. One of them, 19-year-old Brittany Flannigan, a Plymouth State University student, was later pronounced dead. The other two, a man in his 20s and a 24-year-old woman, remain in serious condition at Beth Israel Hospital.

According to a report from the Boston Police Department, an ER nurse at Beth Israel Hospital told officers she found "two pink pills in the victim's right jean pocket and a small packet of a white powder substance in the victims bra." Police said the drugs were turned in as evidence and the woman was summonsed to Roxbury District Court for Possession of Class B and E Drugs.

All three people were attending a show headlined by DJ Zedd. That type of music has a reputation for drug use, especially the new form of ecstasy known as "Molly."

Officials say the three people involved did not know each other and now investigators are trying to determine how they ended up overdosing.

Toxicology tests on the victims are pending.

The House of Blues has faced violations in the past, but both instances involved alcohol being served to minors.

DJ Zedd canceled his concert Wednesday night, saying on Twitter "love and respect to those in pain right now. Our hearts go out to you."  He later Tweeted "please, everyone, be responsible!"

Club spokesman Jay Anderson said in a statement that "the safety of our guests is our top priority" and expressed sympathy for the victim's family and friends. He said the club has been working with authorities.

Homicide detectives were working the case. Anyone with information is asked to call 617-343-4470.

Statement from Plymouth State University:

"Plymouth State University extends condolences to the family and friends of Brittany Flannigan. Brittany was a familiar figure on campus and her presence will be missed by all who knew her and loved her."
