WORCESTER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A car slammed into a Worcester building Tuesday morning, leaving the driver, a Worcester police sergeant working a detail in the area and a third person who tried to help injured.

Police said an officer, identified as Sgt. Fallavollita, was responding to a report that a car had struck a concrete pillar on the sidewalk in front of Radio Shack at Webster Square Plaza. The driver then slammed into the building.

When the Fallavollita and the other person attempted to check on the driver of the car involved in the minor crash, the driver suddenly hit the gas and began speeding in reverse, running over the Fallavollita. The other person was also hurt when the car accelerated.

All three people, including the driver, were taken to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Fallavollita suffered severe leg injuries.

Police said the driver appeared to possibly be suffering from a medical condition; however, the driver, later identified as 20-year-old Ryan Hehir, of Shrewsbury, has since been charged with failure to stay in one lane, operating negligent so as to endanger, and operating under the influence of narcotics.

Deputy Fire Chief Geoffrey Gardell told FOX 25 the driver took a column out after crashing into the building, but the building remains sound.

No one in the store was hurt. The business was closed when the incident happened. An investigation is ongoing.
