After hibernating for more than 70 long years, the Mercer Bears are getting set for a football comeback this Saturday!  Perhaps no one is more proud than 93-year-old Pappy Boynton, who was a left guard for the Bears and is one of the last surviving members of their last football season.

Boynton says 72 years later, he still gets butterflies.  His jacket from 1941 still fits him.  The Mercer football organization has been gone for seven years, and a lot has changed.

The Bears were 3-6 during that 1941 season, and it's a year that will live in infamy.  In December 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked, and Boynton says many of his teammates went off to war.  Some never returned.

Boynton himself spent four years in the military.  After that, he finished his education and then worked in aviation.  He never played football again, but he never lost his enthusiasm for the sport.

This weekend, Boynton, his wife and family will gather, and he'll make his way to Anderson Field for the Bears' first game.  He says he gets more excited every time he thinks about it, and it'll be an honor to be recognized.

Mercer hosts Reinhardt on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
