Cedarbook MS Won't Open On Time Because Of Mold

Kids at one Montgomery County school have a longer summer vacation, but it wasn't part of the original plan. Doors are staying closed because of a mold problem. Cedarbrook Middle School won't open on September 3rd with others in the district. It will be opening on September 16th instead because more mold remediation needs to be done.

Superintendent Natalie Thomas told parents at a meeting that the weather has created the need to prolong the cleaning and test the building before they can let students back in.

School officials don't want kids to fall behind, and some parents say that the district's plan for academics is sufficient.

"They've sent out extensive booklets, they have assignments online, our local libraries are on board so they're bringing kids in and they have programs for the kids during those days. And the reality is that it's only about five days that we're missing," says Kristina Griffin, a parent.

Cleaning is also a temporary fix, as heat, humidity and rain means mold will likely come back, officials say. They will be working on plans to address that once they can get the school open on September 16th.

"I wish I could tell you that it won't come back, I can't. I wish I could tell you we could fix it, but I can't," says Superintendent Thomas.

While most parents obviously feel this is an unfortunate situation, many of them say the school district has done an excellent job keeping them informed on the process with the school. But still they say they hope the long-term plan is to tear down this building and to rebuild.
